About

Kaya Butter Toast is a personal finance blog. We share our journey of growing and preserving our money as a HNW couple living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Why Kaya Butter Toast?

Not only is it one of our favourite Malaysian breakfasts, it is also a play on the word kaya, which means rich in the Malay language, and bread and butter, a source of income.

It’s simple and fulfilling, much like how investing probably can and should be!

What made me start this blog?

Over the past few years, my husband and I have been trying to navigate the world of personal finance and investments. While we are generally good savers due to upbringing, neither of us were familiar with investing.

We sought the service of banks and financial advisors, only to lose money and time. Many bankers pushed products we did not need. Some products were downright dodgy! In the end, we realized that we could not rely on others to take care of our finances.

So I started to learn as much as I could about personal finance, property investing and wealth management. Over the years I also picked up some tips from tax advisors and financial advisors to optimize our business finances. As a bonus, I also like to spreadsheet stuff like best credit card for miles. I decided to share all this in a blog in case it’s useful to others and because I like the written form (you won’t be finding me on TikTok!).

Disclaimer note: None of this is financial or tax advice! This is more of a thought dump of some of our experiences, strategies and research.
